RE: Anime Nite Dating Game & Future Events

Every second Friday of the month we host Anime Nite @ The Geek Easy, an event that's main objective is to show great anime to the public of Orlando.

Once in a while, we try to have a non-viewing event to change the pace a bit and to bring in a new crowd. Sometimes, those events don't turn out as well as we expected them to and audibles have to be called.

Last night we had the Anime Nite Dating Game make it's return along with a double feature showing. The original plan was to warm the crowd up with Ah! My Goddess, have four rounds of the Anime Nite Dating Game, and finish off with Ranma 1/2: Nihao My Concubine.

The dating game was something that has been demanded for quite sometime since it was held back in January. We wanted to hold it in May but our previous hosts weren't available. We tried getting them in July and they were still not certain for availability. People wanted the event and we knew we could organize it pretty well.

A lot of people came out to watch the dating game and it certainly had its entertainment value. However, for all the people who wanted to watch, there was a lack of interest in participating.

Unfortunately, this event had a low amount of female turnout compared to last month's MANIME night, which surprising to everyone except us, had a fantastic ratio of male and female attendees.

We only had one round of the Anime Nite Dating Game. It was certainly fun but the event didn't meet our expectations, and after investing much time and financial resources into making the event happen and promoting it, we have decided it is not worth doing again.

With that said, the actual part that was about anime did well. We showed not only Ranma 1/2: Nihao My Concubine, but also the 50th Anniversary Shonen Sunday Ranma 1/2 special. A lot of laughs were shared and it's great to know that after all these years, Ranma 1/2 still has what it takes to make a crowd happy.

Ah! My Goddess is an okay show but is below the standards of what we should be showing every month. It has a strong female fanbase, which we were hoping would bring in plenty of ladies needed to make the dating game a success. In all honesty, we would have done better with Berserk.

We called an audible and we decided to have alternatives for people to vote on in case there was something they'd rather see. In addition to Ah! My Goddess, we had two great movies for people to choose from in The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and REDLINE. REDLINE won the vote and a fun time was had by all who watched it!

Several people last night told me that they never seen REDLINE before and were glad they did. With that, last night was more of a success than a failure. Moving forward, our Anime Nites @ The Geek Easy will be like Chris Candido: no gimmicks needed. (But only like that. RIP.)

That means our future Anime Nites will strictly be about showcasing great anime that everyone should see. We'll have announcements that our relevant to the local anime community. Our next Anime Nite will be on Friday, August 10th and will be dedicated to the memory of the late, great Satoshi Kon.

We'll be showing two of his films, Perfect Blue and Millenium Actress. If you aren't down with that, then you must not like awesome movies, anime or otherwise. It will be a grand night!

In other good news, one our guys will be able to form a group to go out to the Enzian on Sunday, July 29th to see Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away. Thanks Shane! We'll have details up tomorrow! Plus, we have AFO 13 to look forward to as well!

To those who have supported us in our quest to elevate the local anime community by enriching it with something better, we thank you. We'll not only stick to doing that, but we will also do it BETTER. Stay tuned.
