Recap of yesterday's meeting! 5/9/10 edition!

We had a super fun time yesterday as guns were blazing in everything we watched at the meeting!

NEWS
  • The head of Anime Spot, UCF's anime club, contacted me about the two clubs doing a hangout together in during their Summer term. Our club has a agreed and I have notified their leader! I'll get back to you on that!
  • Panels for AFO that have been approved are starting to be posted on their website, including the Rebirth of Evangelion panel that our guys do so well!
  • The Guin Saga has been licensed by Sentai Filmworks! Here's hoping for an awesome BluRay release!
  • We talked a little bit about Bang Zoom! Entertainment's president Eric Sherman declaring "anime is going to die" and that their studio would stop dubbing anime in 2011 if DVD and BluRay sales did not pick up.
    • Since then, he appeared on ANN's podcast and clarified what he meant. Basically, if sales don't improve, companies won't have money to pay for dub production and cease altogether.
    • He also said that Bandai Entertainment(one of BZ's customers) is depending heavily on the success of the future Haruhi Suzumiya releases and "one other title."
    • Bandai Entertainment responded saying that things are currently going fine, but if sales don't pick up then no more dubs.
Say what you will about dubs, you can't argue that they bring in new anime fans. Without dubs, the fandom can't grow. It's as simple as that. We'll see how Bandai Entertainment's future goes.

And now for what we watched!

Recap of tonight's meeting! 4/24/10 edition!

Tonight was a good end! We had to move from our usual room to a different classroom. While it did have a nice sound system and comfy seats, the projectors were less than adequate. It was so close to becoming the new room to meet at. Oh well...

Next Propeller Anime Club meeting on Saturday, April 24th at 5:00 pm!

UPDATE: The next Propeller Anime Club meeting will now be Saturday, April 24th at 5:00pm in FS3B-113 at Full Sail University! This meeting will be one of the most exciting ever as we will be finishing series and starting a new one!

We will be finishing The Guin Saga! Oh man, do I love it when we complete a series! It's been a pretty epic journey and it's finally coming to a close! For those who missed the last meeting, a lot has happened, with many pieces falling into place. Will the Mongauli be defeated? Will Amnelis get to kill Naris? Which pedophile will hook up with Rinda - Istovan Spellsword or Aldo Naris? Will Guin discover his forgotten past? Will Suni show her true savage nature and go on a mass killing spree!? We shall find out next time!

We didn't get to show Gungrave last meeting but we hopefully will this time. Here's some copy pasta:

In Gungrave, it looks like Harry has been discovered as the real traitor to Millenion, after having many of its valueable members framed and killed. Now it's up to Brandon Heat to take him out! What will happen between these two longtime friends?

We'll be finishing up Rurouni Kenshin: Romantic Tales from the Meiji Era. Lots of killing will happen and introduced will be characters that will grow to be Kenshin's greatest villians later on in the main series! He still has one cut left to get to finish that trademark cross shaped scar on his cheek!

Last but not least, it's time to debut a new series!

One of the best series that helped end the last decade will be shown starting next meeting! It's Baccano! What's Baccano? It's about some gangstas who wanna be immortal by drinkin the finest 40's New York has ever seen. It takes place during the Great Depression in New York City, Chicago, and a train known as the Flying Pussyfoot and features an outrageous cast of criminals, thieves, murderers, gangsters, and even immortals! It's seriously great stuff!

Next meeting will be exciting and after we finish The Guin Saga, it will be time to use democracy to decide what we shall show in its place starting in May. It will be kinda like that one time we did it!

Recap of yesterday's meeting! 4/10/10 edition!

Spring Break, oh how I always forget that you have the lowest attended meetings. It was myself, Steven, Althea, and Waldo this time. We did get to watch some good stuff though. Here's a recap:
  • We watched the newest episode of Dragonball Z: Abridged. Krillin did something naughty in the caves.
  • We also viewed the abridged version of Bardock: Father of Goku. It was a humorous take on one of the best tales of all of Dragonball Z. Bardock, unfortunately saw way to far into the future. Terrible things! (Hint: It was that third Dragonall anime we will never mention in club!)
  • We watched a few episodes of The Guin Saga. Everything is falling in place!
  • Guin killed four assassins quickly and discovered that some one out there may know of his past. So Guin departs on his own for a journey. Did I mention that Suni actually helped Guin kill one of the assassins? For reals!
  • Naris becames badass, puts on his armor and takes the Crystal Palace back from the Mongauls.
  • Skarl finally meets Naris after his long journey and their forces combined are strong enough to defeat the Mongaul.
  • News of Naris being alive and taking the castle reaches the Mongauls, specifically Princess Amnelis. Having realized that Naris had decieved her this whole time, she snaps, cuts off her hair, and vows to kill Naris herself!
  • Istovan gets news of many things and uses it to get on the side of Naris. He becomes Naris's personal bodyguard though it looks like Istovan wants to kill Naris once he realizes that Naris also desires Rinda.
  • Remus is acting as if he is the King of Parross already! He learned some valueable lessons in leadership from Guin.
  • Long story short, Guin is going for his original goals, Naris has assembled a giant army, Remus is growing up, and the Mongaul are finally going down. We'll see how it all ends next meeting!
  • Nobody knows about Cho Aniki.
  • Gungrave was not shown. We'll hopefully see it next time!
  • We watched a short film called Cencoroll. It was about two high school kids who have the ability to control aliens with telepathy. One kid wants the other's alien pet, and they battle it out for most of the short film. There was some great animation and it was fun to watch!
  • We watched the first half of the Rurouni Kenshin OVA. Lots of people got cut into pieces and it rained crimson! We learned about Kenshin's origins in his path to becoming an assassin and joining up with a group trying to overthrow the ruling Bakufu.
  • Kenshin has one cut on his cheek already! I bet that means he'll get the other one next time!
We'll be finishing up TWO anime next time. Exciting times!

Next Propeller Anime Club meeting on Saturday, April 10th!

Man, it looks like we missed April Fools this year. I had some great ideas too! Unfortunately, things in convention land got busy.

This Sunday afternoon we are having a barbecue! It shall be awesome!

Our next club meeting will be on Saturday, April 10th at 1:15 pm in FS3B-113 at Full Sail University! Our main feature will be Cencoroll, a short 30 minute film nearly singlehandedly written, designed, directed, and animated by Atsuya Yuki. It's about a high school boy and his shapeshifting creature named Cenco that he controls with telepathy. Well, I am sure there's more to it than that but I haven't watched it yet!

We are six episodes away from finishing The Guin Saga(or is it The Naris Saga?)! We need to finish this over the next couple meetings so we can move on to something else. A revolt is supposed to happen in Crystal during the next episode and assassins are trying to kill Guin!

In Gungrave, it looks like Harry has been discovered as the real traitor to Millenion, after having many of its valueable members framed and killed. Now it's up to Brandon Heat to take him out! What will happen between these two longtime friends?

We have plenty of time left this meeting due to the length of Cencoroll. I was considering starting a new series but some of you will be out of town due to spring break and it'd suck for people to be lost if they missed opening episodes to a new series. So to fill in the space, I thought of something more digestable...

Recap of today's meeting! 3/27/10 edition!

Today was our first meeting after MegaCon which means we can finally shut up about it for a while. It's too bad we already started talking about Anime Festival Orlando, happening August 6th - 8th! A few people were new to the club today and we discovered that way more than half of the club are film students! Here's a rundown of what happened:
  • Talked about what we liked and did not like at MegaCon and shared stories and videos.
  • Discussed AFO. Panel submissions, artist alley, and of course Skies of Orlandia!
  • We celebrated Brent and Roger's birthdays! If you see either anytime soon, wish them a happy birthday!
  • Brandon Heat got all gussied up for Gungrave. Harry is trying to set up traitors while he himself is planning to pull a coup on Millenion.
  • Lots of shooting and explosions, featuring Bunji Kugashira! He's straight out of a John Woo 80s flick!
  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lp-USKnPDbY&feature=player_embedded LoL
  • Some people nobody liked died in The Guin Saga. Which should be called The Naris Saga because the 3 episodes we watched were all about him. Guin was probably in the whole thing for like 6 minutes max.
  • Guin did cut through a assassin, cutting a tree in half. It was so exciting!
  • Naris has been in drag quite a bit while Istovan has taken his own path to become a king. Is it me or did Rinda and Remus grow taller?
  • We caught up on Dragonball Z: Abridged. They made filler fun!
  • Lots of club members staying in town for spring break. This means barbeque and pool party next weekend! Details to come soon!
  • Zak proposed we show Baccano! in the near future. I am behind this. Brent proposed something but I cannot remember what it was!
  • Lastly, we showed Satoshi Kon's Paprika. People claimed to "get it." And or course everyone made fun of the fat dude, Tokita.
  • Did that big climax remind anyone else of Ultraman?
Next meeting will be on Saturday, April 10th for sure! Cencoroll will be shown as our feature. Since there will be no classes that day, getting a room at a reasonable time will be quite easy! Stay tuned for future announcements!

Next Propeller Anime Club meeting on Saturday, March 27th at 4:00pm!

This Saturday, March 27th we will be meeting on the campus of Full Sail University to have fun and watch anime! Our feature showing will be Satoshi Kon's Paprika. You may recall that we watched Perfect Blue at the last club meeting. It was a great movie and the first that Satoshi Kon directed. Paprika is the most recent full-length film that he directed so we will be able to see how is abilities have evolved from 1998 to 2006.

We will also continue on with Gungrave and Guin Saga. Hopefully, we will finish Guin Saga in the next few meetings. It is getting pretty exciting as it appears someone may die soon! We will also share our experiences of MegaCon; good, bad, and just plain weird!

The meeting time will be at 4:00pm and hopefully room FS3B-113 will be available. I do know that finals will be taking place that day but hopefully we will have room free for us regardless.

We want your pictures and videos!

Hey everyone! We're been looking on the internet for pictures and videos of our MegaCon events. We know they exist because we saw you all with cameras at our events! A lot of you got our flyers and hopefully held on to them long enough to discover our website! Anyways, if you have any pictures or video taken of our event, we'd love to post them up!

You can either post links in the comments or you can e-mail them to me at ward.kent_at_gmail_dot_com. I will give you credit for your work if that is something you want!

Looks like our next meeting will be on Sunday, March 28th. We meet on the campus of Full Sail University in Winter Park, FL. The time and location are both tentatively set for 1:00pm in room FS3B-113. We should have no problem getting that room but I'll have a more official post next week!

We're definitely showing Gungrave and The Guin Saga. Both are great series! We are almost halfway through Gungrave and 2/3s into Guin Saga. We normally show a movie since that is something that can be started and finished within a meeting and is great for anyone who can't be at every meeting or just started. I am open to suggestions and I recall hearing one for Satoshi Kon's Paprika. I am totally down for that and I am open to more ideas until this weekend is over.

Next Propeller Anime Club meeting on Saturday, February 27th at 5:00 pm!

Our next meeting will be on Saturday, February 27th at 5:00 p.m. at Full Sail University in FS3B-112! We will be showing Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue! This was Satoshi's breakout movie success that was then followed by Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, and Paprika. Needless to say, Satoshi Kon is one of the more important anime directors!

Perfect Blue is about a Japanese pop idol who tries to break into acting, that has to deal with murder and danger following her everywhere from obsessive fans that do not appreciate her career change. We'll be showing this movie last as it is a little more graphic than what we usually show!

We'll start the meeting off with more clear discussions about what we should plan for as a club. There are fun things we have discussed doing like a beach trip, going to a Renaissance fair, or visiting Disney. Those things cost money so we may want to do a fundraiser. I've been presented with several ideas such as UGS 4, bake sale, and letting people pay to beat Waldo with padded weapons.

Last but not least, this will be the final regular meeting before MegaCon and I hope that all our ducks are in a row by then. We'll do one last final talk about it, but I suggest that you read the survival guide I wrote in order to prepare.

After the initial discussions of what we should do, Zak and some of the others want to show the Italian animated Titanic. I don't remember why but let's just get it out of the way!

And then we'll watch more Gungrave, Guin Saga, and finally Perfect Blue!

Next Propeller Anime Club meeting on Saturday, February 13th at 1:00 pm!

This Sunday, we shall be doing bowling at Aloma Bowl for Zak's birthday and we shall meet at Aloma Bowl at 1:30 pm! The next regular meeting we have will be on Saturday, February 13th at 1:00 pm at Full Sail University in FS3B-305. This is a slightly different room but in the same building. What is nice is that there are comfy couches outside the classroom if anyone wants to lounge.

We shall finally watch Special Duty Combat Shinesman! This is a 2-episode OVA that parodies sentai/tokusatsu teams such as the Japanese Power Rangers. We actually have it in our possession so awesomeness should occur!

We'll watch more Gungrave since we didn't get to last time along with Guin Saga.

Hopefully, if we are not strapped for time(meaning, no class in that room at 5:00 pm), we can delve into the greatness of Satoshi Kon, director of fine works such as Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers, Perfect Blue, and more! It is a travesty that our club has not watched any of his movies yet and there is nobody to blame for that except me. So I will try to make right on that this month.

If we don't have time, I have a special throwback for some of you new members. I don't think you have seen it yet. Mwahahahaha!

I will also teach you all about White Day and how the Japanese celebrate Valentines Day. In case some of you actually plan to.

See you all soon!

Recap of today's meeting! 1/24/10 edition!

HEY EVERYONE. IF YOU DIDN'T SHOW UP TO TODAY'S MEETING, THEN YOU HAVE MISSED OUT!

We showed Summer Wars, which was released in Japanese theaters last April. It was produced by Madhouse and directed by Mamoru Hosoda(The Girl Who Lept Through Time). I don't even know what happened while we watched it. However, it was FANTASTIC! This is the kind of new anime that Japan needs! Spread the word about Summer Wars because the people need to know that there is more to modern anime besides all the shonen and moe crap out.

Oh, we also watched There will be Brawl, Guin Saga, and some weeabo on American Idol. Her name is Mere Doyle and we had LULZ at her expense.

Club meeting this Sunday, January 24th at 1:30 p.m.

Hey guys!

I feel like a Slowbro because I just realized that I have not formally announced that there will be a club meeting this Sunday, January 24th. Well, there will be one at 1:30 p.m. in FS3B-113. We will show the final episode of There will be Brawl, some Guin Saga(for reals this time), Gungrave, and something democratic! Last meeting, we voted on what feature we would show this time. Special Duty Combat Unit Shinesman won the popular vote as Noah has that on order. If it shows up on time, we shall watch it! If not, I recall Summer Wars winning the runner-up vote. Sounds good to me, either way!

We really didn't get photos from Hard Knocks, but fun was had! Some of us got in some good rounds of laser tag and a lot of console and PC gaming was done as well. We all went to FOT one last time and we got some great group photos. I have posted them up on the FaceBook page and they will be on the blog eventually. I think I may have to look into a photo gallery site soon as we get more photos!

See you guys this Sunday!

Recap of tonight's meeting! 1/10/10 edition!

Okay, I'll make this short and sweet!
  • We discussed MegaCon 2010! Members of the Propeller Anime Club - including myself - are responsible for running and hosting eleven action-packed events! Huzzah!
  • We will be meeting next Sunday, January 17th, at noon in front of Full Sail building 3B to go to Hard Knocks for free Full Sail student gaming! Make sure that you have your student pass or else you do not get free gaming!
  • We watched episodes 8 & 9 of There will be Brawl! That Poke'mon theme cover was pretty sweet! Only one more episode to go!
  • The entire Read or Die OVA was watched and it was frikkin sweet! Such great action, art direction, mechanical designs, and soundtrack! We need more good anime like this in the world!
  • We watched episodes 7 & 8 of Gungrave. Brandon and Harry are moving on up in the world and it looks like some sinister plot will begin to unfold next time!
  • During episode 8, we all got distracted by the creation of our first club logo! oh YEAH!! Great job, Waldo!
  • We never got around to watching Guin Saga. The meeting was that action packed! We will next time for sure!
  • Jean "Rehab" Louis has returned after a mysterious 2 month disappearance! It was a joyous moment!
  • We experimented with democracy to determine what we will show at the next regular meeting and Shinesman won the popular vote!

Club meeting this Sunday, January 10th at 5:00 p.m.!

We shall be having a Propeller Anime Club meeting this Sunday, January 10th at 5:00 p.m. in FS3B-113. Well that is the plan. It is Full Sail's open house that day and scheduling likes to reserves all the rooms on campus that day for BTS use even though most of the rooms aren't being used and the open house ends by 5:00 p.m. anyways. We will meet regardless!

We shall be showing the Read or Die OVA as requested last time. I watched some video of it recently and it looked cool. We will also be watching Guin Saga(which we are halfway through) and Gungrave. There will be Brawl finished on the interwebs so we will try finishing that before the month ends.

We will also be talking about Megacon, which will be from March 12th to March 14th! We have some events and panels approved and I am working on the schedule! We shall discuss this more in detail on Sunday! I hope to have a guide to Megacon up sometime this week. The guide will be multi-part, covering what the convention is about, how to prepare and survive, and what to see if you like anime(I am assuming you all do).

We have other plans to discuss but we'll get to that when the meeting comes. See you all then!

Ninja action time! We are having a meeting this Friday, November 18th!

Sorry for the lack of updates! I have been busy at my new job. We've had a couple meetings since the last time this blog has been updated.

On November 21st, we watched Akira and ate delicious Thanksgiving deserts made by some of our club members! I also brought strawberry cupcakes. In addition, a hero brought lots of beef jerky which is appropriate for any occasion!

After some grubbin and socilalizin, we sat down of one big, happy nerd family and watched the movie and gave thanks to the anime gods(or Katsuhiro Otomo). Even to this day Akira is still a great movie and a cornerstone of anime. We were originally going to have it in the auditorium, but that did not work out. Many of us agreed that having it in the normal place works just fine.

On December 6th, we had an anime potluck with consisted of Riding Bean, Ghost in the Shell, and an episode of Pocket Monsters that featured Porygon and gave kids in Japan seizures! It was an awesome day! Nobody got a seizure at the meeting though. No, Waldo is always like that.

So we've been watching some classic anime films as of late. I am really happy about that because a lot of you haven't seen movies like Akira or Vampire Hunter D, so I think exposing you to that for the sake of being an legitimate anime fan is important. These are greats that still stand the test of time and offer a lot in terms of substance to even the modern age anime fan.

A lot of you have grown up on this shonen anime series called Naruto, which is about a boy ninja with a demon sealed inside him who constantly feels the need to prove himself to the people around him. It has it's merits; however, a lot of you need to see some intense ninja action.

So tomorrow night, we are going to watch Ninja Scroll, which was one of my first anime movies. I saw it a couple weeks ago after watching Ninja Assassin, and it's still pretty badass. It even has some romance in it! I am also sporting a new laptop, so we can continue watching Guin Saga, which may just be the best anime of 2009. Guin and those monkey people have a war with the Mongols to finish and Guin just recruited some strong allies to help them out. It's going to be intense!

A lot of you will be elsewhere for the next couple weeks and I wish you all safe travel and fun times! The next meeting will be Friday night(tomorrow), December 18th at 9:15 p.m. and it will be held in FS3B-113 at Full Sail University. See you all there!

Next meeting: Sunday, October 25th at 2:00 p.m. THREE YEARS!

I am excited and very proud to announce our third anniversary club meeting for this Sunday, October 25th at 2:00 p.m. in FS3B-113! We won't do anything too fancy; we'll show some cool anime, share stories of our exploits at conventions and club outings, and enjoy some snacks and sweets!

That's right! I'm bringing cake! And other goodies! (Feel free to bring stuff if you can!)

We'll be showing episodes 8 & 9 of Guin Saga, which is probably the single best anime of this year. Not only that, we'll be showing episodes 3 & 4 of Gungrave and Hayao Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky!

Now for those who haven't been to the club as of late, you may not see this as fun. But meeting as of late have turned into little anime parties that are highly entertaining! Let me put it this way: Do you like anime? Do you like hanging out with cool people? Do you want to make good friends? If you answered "yes" to all those questions, then you definitely want to come to the meeting this Sunday!

Recap of this past week's meeting. 9/27 edition!

This past meeting was extremely awesome! We had eight new members show up an introduce themselves. Seven of them started classes this week, so I got to be their first Full Sail teacher at the meeting. After seeing a few different shows, I used them as reinforcement of covering man law, which they may have been unfamiliar with.

We filled in the gap left by Outlaw Star with Gungrave. I haven't done any research on it yet, but it is originally created byYasuhiro Nightow, who is most famous for creating Trigun. It's a cool series right now. It looks like the main character, Brandon Heat has a split personality, or the second episode is going back in time to wear he was just a mere human. We shall see as it will be regularly shown at meetings.

Guin Saga was pure epic. Guin put on some badass armor, united all the Sem tribes, and then went to war with the Mongauls. He fought back to back with Istavan(who decided to cosplay Strider) and then Guin took an old man's giant sword and hurled it Amnelis' direction and made her scream like a little girl. Guin also told her in an indirect way that her place is in the kitchen. Guin also made her biggest fan cry like a bitch when he owned him. Overall, Guin Saga was strictly badass this time around. And the war is still going on!

After a couple hilarious episodes of There will be Brawl, we got a round to watching some Vampire Hunter D. Only myself and one other club member were born when the movie came out in 1985. It was still enjoyed by all and I look forward to showing the club members more classics in the future!

Last but not least, we had to say goodbye to another member at the club. Simon Wong, who's seniority in the club is only eclisped by mine has recently graduated from Full Sail University and will be returning home. Simon is the only one around long enough to see the earlier, and more difficult times of the club. Over the past two years, the club has been booming and awesome, but it hasn't always been that way. Simon has always been a pleasure to have around and a valueable contributor of many of the great anime that we have shown in the club. He will truly be missed! I wish you luck in you future endeavors, Simon!

Next meeting: Sunday, September 27th at 2:00 p.m.

The next Propeller Anime Club meeting will be on Sunday, September 27th at 2:00 p.m. in FS3B-113. In our latest obsession to show a classic anime movie at each regular meeting, we will be showing the original Vampire Hunter D film from 1985. Many of you might be more familiar with Bloodlust, but this movie is more or less D's origin story. It is also one of the first ever anime films to be released outside of Japan! It's an interesting take on horror in a post-apocalyptic, sci-fi setting.

We'll also be showing episodes 6 & 7 of Guin Saga. I'm sure everyone is hoping for Guin to go berserk on someone. The story is developing pretty well so I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next.

We will also be starting up a new series. I have no idea what; however, finishing Outlaw Star does leave a gap in our viewing schedule. If it is figured out before the next meeting, this blog will be the first place to check! be sure to follow our Twitter as well @PropellerAnime!
